India vs South Africa: Shubman Gill released from the squad ahead of second Test in Guwahati

Down 0-1 in the two-match Test series against South Africa, hosts India suffered another blow as captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of the second Test to be be held in Guwahati from Saturday (November 22).The 26-year-old flew to Guwahati along with the team on Wednesday, but played no part in India’s outdoor nets session at the Barsapara Stadium on Thursday.

India skipper Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa, with Rishabh Pant confirmed to take over the captaincy role.

The right-handed batter Gill suffered a neck spasm during India’s defeat in Kolkata and was later admitted to a private hospital and kept under observation.

The 26-year-old flew to Guwahati along with the team on Wednesday, but played no part in India’s outdoor nets session at the Barsapara Stadium on Thursday.

“We will announce the team combination tomorrow. We have already sort of decided and spoken to the player,” Pant told reporters on Friday regarding Gill’s replacement in the playing XI.

“I think he is getting better. He was very keen on playing this Test. I got to know yesterday that I will be the captain,” revealed the wicketkeeper-batter, who will be India’s 38th Test captain.
