'Even If You're Not Playing…': How Kuldeep Yadav Stayed Prepared & Motivated Despite Being Benched During T20 World Cup

Kuldeep Yadav stresses preparation and an attacking mindset in T20s, backing DC’s top order despite early setbacks and gearing up for a tough challenge against the Mumbai Indians.

Not getting a game at home despite being part of a World Cup squad can take a mental toll. Frustration creeps in, often leading to self-doubt.

So, how does one stay motivated?

Experience – the kind that comes from dealing with such situations before.

Ask Kuldeep Yadav. Despite being part of India’s T20 World Cup 2026-winning squad – where the team scripted history with a record third title – he spent most of the tournament on the bench – 7 out of eight matches to be precise.

For Kuldeep, the key challenge was staying ready. He remained fully involved in team training sessions, approaching every practice with complete commitment.

“Preparation becomes crucial, especially when you’re not getting games. I made sure there was no gap in my preparation so that whenever an opportunity came, I was ready," Kuldeep told reporters on the eve of the DC vs MI clash in New Delhi.

“Even if you’re not playing, being with the team, attending practice sessions, and maintaining that match-ready mindset is important. Whether you play or not, your approach should always be that you’re ready for the next game," he added.

Giving your hundred percent in the nets also plays a big role – it helps maintain sharpness and ensures you’re ready to deliver when the opportunity arrives.

Kuldeep followed this approach consistently throughout the tournament.

“Confidence comes from preparation. If your training and routines are in place, you will naturally feel confident, even though a bit of nervousness is always there," Kuldeep said.

“Planning against batters is constant; you assess where they want to score and how they might approach you. With new batters, it becomes more challenging, but overall, preparation is what builds confidence," he added.

He has carried that confidence into IPL 2026, where he is representing Delhi Capitals.

T20 cricket has rarely been kind to bowlers, with conditions heavily favouring batters. Yet, in recent years, Kuldeep has reinforced his reputation as one of the most skilful left-arm wrist-spinners in the game.
